Carly Caryn

Carly Caryn

Carly Caryn is a Hollywood native who currently resides in San Francisco’s Mission District and Sonoma’s Wine Country. An event producer and artist with a wicked Eye For Style, she specializes in photography, writing, styling and design.

While in Hollywood, Carly balanced freelance work as an architectural photographer with wardrobe styling and set decorating for print & TV. A decade later, feeling like it was time for a big life shake up, she moved cross-country to Manhattan’s Greenwich Village where she focused her sights on capturing culinary delights and travel destinations. In 2013, she criss-crossed coasts once again, following her heart to San Francisco where she was soon co-creating large immersive art & music event productions alongside her partner in crime, Joegh Bullock at Anon Events.

Her latest creative endeavor is as Designer and Director of Historic Hollywood Photographs, one of the largest photographic and reference collections, comprising over 10,000 photos of Hollywood taken between 1880-2012.

Other days, you can find her in the redwoods near the Russian River, playing in the dirt, making art, experimenting in the kitchen, and envisioning future collaborations and adventures.

“Ask, believe, receive”. These words have always served me well. Make time for quiet. Listen closely to your heart and soul. Put pen to paper, write it all down, refer back often. Speak your desires out loud and allow the Universe to work its magic. Stay open and curious. Trust your inner knowing. Say NO to anything that’s not in alignment. You don’t have to understand exactly how it will all come together, just keep checking in, putting it out there, and taking action. Change course if/when necessary. Repeat!
My entire career, I’ve always worked as a freelancer. I knew early on, I wasn’t cut out for the 9 to 5 grind. I need the creative freedom to wear different hats and work on a variety of projects. Sometimes it’s scary not knowing where your next gig will come from, but it also encourages you to stretch, remain flexible and try things you might not otherwise. You learn a lot about yourself, and every opportunity leads to other opportunities. Some paths clearly aren’t a good fit. Other times you end up attracting experiences you never would’ve thought and it’s better than anything you could’ve imagined! Speak your dreams out loud, trust, don’t be afraid to take leaps and try things on for size. “Failure” is a great teacher. Welcome it. It’s all part of your journey.
Meaty question! So many thoughts, so little time to submit this. Hopefully I’ve addressed this some in other answers.
I love Pinterest. So many uses for it. I love searching for art and discovering new artists, getting inspired visually, going down rabbit holes, creating vision boards for future projects, and slideshows for projection. I’m getting really into certain podcasts and listening to long form articles via Audm. Ted Talks are the bomb. Meditation apps (Insight Timer, Calm, Ten Percent Happier) are great for sanity. Recently started exploring YouTube for exercise/stretching/foam rolling videos to create a daily-ish feel good body movement practice.

Focus on self care and what really sparks joy/lights you up. Use this time to plan, strategize, explore, contemplate, incubate ideas and collaborators. Don’t make any big changes or decisions during times of strife. Give yourself permission to not be productive. Celebrate the days you are. Be kind to yourself. These are unprecedented times. Try to zoom out and see the big picture. There will be a new life after the pandemic.
