Heather Thiel

Heather Thiel, prior to COVID-19 was a full time jazz singer and MC, introducing some of the San Francisco Bay Area’s best dance and circus artists while honing her skills as a comedic MC in order to hold the show together. When the San Francisco Bay Area Shelter in Place Order was issued in mid March 2020, all of this came to an immediate halt. With all live performance venues closed, Heather thought to transform her kitchen stove into her stage and used the technology she had on hand, a tablet and a cell phone, to begin live streaming so that she could connect with her fellow musicians and performers and make them laugh. What began as a solo improvisational performance, highlighting a healthy dessert recipe, mixing in a few jazz standards, and closing out each show with a jam on acoustic guitar, rapidly evolved into an outdoor “Culinary Cabaret” as she brought on fellow musicians and performers to join her on the Just Add Heather Show. The piano, most of our rugs and lamps, a borrowed drum kit, mics, cables, and stands, moved outside as we pivoted from the kitchen stove as stage to the BBQ in the backyard!
I wasn’t willing to stop doing what I was learning to do, singing and MCing a show. When the San Francisco Bay Area Stay at Home order closed all live-performance venues, I began live streaming baking desserts, singing acapella, and playing acoustic guitar to connect. I saw fellow musicians, performers, entertainers doing the same and wanted to create a platform for them to perform live and connect with a border audience. I began by inviting Aaron Kierbel, well-known Bay Area percussionist who was live streaming his freestyle sessions, into the kitchen for what we called “Baking with Beats” and took the show outdoors, expanded it into a “Culinary Cabaret” as more musicians and performers expressed interest in coming on the JAH Show.
Honoring why you do what you do by being resilient and give yourself to the process of the work knowing that your artistic expression is always evolving.
Tips: Keep it consistent … perform, post, live stream regularly; Tricks: Live stream simultaneously from more than one platform FB, IG, YT, etc.; Tools: We use a DSLR to an El Gato CamLink 4K capture card to a laptop and broadcast to FB Live via OBD while simultaneously recording in high definition which we then later post as episodes to the Just Add Heather YouTube channel. We also add two cell phones to present a more up close and personal view to both IG accounts.
Yes, I’ve been watching live stream music from Katy Stephan, Kippy Marks, Sean Hayes and the California Honey Drops as I’m most inspired by the live streams.
Put yourself out there in any way possible by being you and telling your story and through our individual stories we the tale of our collective human existence in this time.
